A new study makes the following surprising suggestion: macrophages play a central role in modulating salt-sensitive hypertension.

A team from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the Nashville Veterans Affairs Hospital probed the pathway leading to this form of hypertension, in which inhibition of prostaglandin production via inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) can cause or exacerbate salt-sensitive hypertension. In their highly technical report in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, the scientists show that macrophages—a major component of the bone marrow—from kidneys of high-salt–treated, hypertension-negative mice have increased levels of COX-2 and prostaglandin E synthesis. Other experiments they performed reinforced the link between macrophages and salt-sensitive hypertension. Zhang MZ, et al. J Clin Invest. 2015;125:4281-4294; Stegbauer J, Coffman TM.
