The US healthcare and payment delivery model is in transition toward shifting from a volume-based fee-for-service (FFS) model to a performance-based model, with clinicians assuming more risk.

The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act has set aside $19 billion in incentives to encourage healthcare providers to adopt and meaningfully use electronic medical record (EMR) technology in an effort to provide more patient-centered care. This unprecedented investment in health information technology (HIT) will digitize the medical industry and connect patients to their providers electronically for the first time so they (and their families) can be more engaged in their own care.

Widespread adoption of information technology (IT) is now regarded as a pathway to improving healthcare and achieving the highly regarded goals for redesigning care.
Philadelphia, PA—The estimated cost for physician practices to interact with health insurance plans is $23 billion to $31 billion annually, according to a 2009 national survey conducted by Casalino and colleagues (Health Aff. 2009;28:w533-w543).
